Beans and other legumes are highly nutritious and a major source of high-quality protein for billions every day. Their ability to fix nitrogen in the soil reduces farmer fertiliser use and associated environmental damage, and also improves soil quality. However, beans are susceptible to climate change, particularly droughts and extreme weather events. Dr Caspar Chater will talk about his research into bean water use and drought resilience. His work seeks to improve crop adaptation to the climate crisis for improved food and water security.
